Bonnie Etherington, Novelist, Doctoral student
The MCW gave me the time, space, and support for completing over half of what later became my first novel, The Earth Cries Out. It also helped me develop a writing routine, make connections with publishers and other writers, become comfortable with giving and receiving critical feedback, and learning to read as a writer. The people at the School of English & Media Studies are all incredibly generous and supportive, and they helped me build the courage and skills necessary to continue my studies overseas in the USA.
Jillian Sullivan, poet, memoirist,
I loved my time at Massey with the chance to work with such knowledgeable and generous lecturers, especially Bryan Walpert and Thom Conroy. My whole degree was done extramurally - with five children, studying extramurally was my only chance at a university education.
Sarah Jane Barnett,
After I finished my PhD at Massey I went on to publish my second collection of poetry, and much of it came out of my doctoral thesis. I dedicated that book to my doctoral supervisors, because without them, and their supportive and challenging supervision, I wouldn’t have been able to write that book. I always recommend studying at Massey because of the dedication and generosity of the staff, and the depth of knowledge they have. They helped me become a better writer and thinker.
